Episode 002: Sapphic Overtones and New Old Theologies in Practical Magics 1 + 2
Hello and welcome - I’ve made Nicole Kidman look particularly janky above to irk my brother.
We are gathered here today audioly to discuss longwindedly two things.
We make a correction about how John doesn’t truck with screen brunettes but he never actually says he DOES and he does insist on maligning Sandy B throughout this movie.
Practical Magics 1 + 2
We talk about brunette and blonde screen tropes, William Blake's beautiful death, queer subtexts in the 90s vs today, recognizing red flags in relationships, and the re-enchantment of the world.
Digressions include the organizational capacity of the foot fetish community, a tumble into “the kids today don’t want to work” ideology, the approachable mom trope, 90s witchcraft and feminism, plastic surgery, and whether incest is having an unfortunate cultural zeitgeist.
The first movie was kind of bad but relevant, and the second movie was good but its relevance remains to be seen/may not break the surface of our overarching culture.
We will issue our various corrections shortly, while also perhaps touching on Rosemary’s Baby.
